    Unanswered: AIX command

Hi, What is significance of using ' - ' in AIX commands Pl ? Is this a must ?

For example : tar -xvf fil1.tar Vs tar xvf file1.tar

    Many Thanks .

    The "-" has two functions.
It indicates that the following character(s) are modifiers or instructions for the command.
It may also indicate that input to the command is from standard input.
Some commands (tar) will not function without modifiers, so the (tar) program is written in such a way that the first argument is always assumed to be modifiers and the presence of, or lack of a "-" is ignored.
