Unanswered: Contact List with Sections for each letter of the alphabet

Hi, I just made a contact list for a friend at work, but the list is kind of long. I'm wondering, is there a away to break it up by A B C D, etc? and have a big A where A's start and B where B's start? Thanks for any help?!!

    yeap

    in Query that list them

    add
FirstLetter:Ucase(left([feildname]),1))This will just show the first letter and make this the First Sort option

    now in the report

add firstletter as a group header and play with the keep group together.

drop the Firstletter in that group heading make the font bigger

Ucase() = make it upper case just in case it not

    left(word,numberoflettersyouwant)

Hi, I'm sorry but I don't understand your response.

I was using the template from the NorthWind database. They have a text box with some code in it: =UCase(Left(Nz([File As]),1)) - similar to what you wrote. So I copied the text box and put it in my report but nothing happened.

I saw that in the group by area, the text box was an option to choose as a sort, but I can't figure how to make it become an option. What section do I put it in? I've been trying to figure this out for two days, somebody please help!

Hello again, I finally made it work! Yay!!!

However, some of the contacts are companies that start with numbers. How can I supress the heading so that it will not lable the numbers, but will start at "A"? Thanks again for any help!

    put a New Coloum in

we can use instr() find something in a string

instr("0123456789",2) will return 2 its in the list
instr("0123456789","a") will return 0 its not in list

    or we could use val()

    val("a1") return 0
    val("1a") return 1

we can use a iiF() thats if and only if

    check:iif(val([feildname])>0,"ZZZ",left([feildname],1))

now sort the check all number should be at botton of list
    hope this help
