Unanswered: Cannot open mdf file in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005

I had Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 installed already. I just

installed the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 and

tried to open my mdf file. I get an error message that says:

There is no editor available for 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\intranet\app_data

Make sure the application for the file type (.mdf) is installed.

Did I do something wrong? I just clicked through the defaults in the

    Management Studio Express install.

How can I get this to work?

I would recommend that you copy the MDF and associated LDF files to the location where the other files are on your system. If these are on the C: drive, that is Ok for a development workstation but it is a really bad idea for a production server.

Once you have the MDF and LDF files where you need them, right click on the "databases" drop down in SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio), and select the Attach menu option. Fill in the dialog box, and things usually go smoothly.

In theory, theory and practice are identical. In practice, theory and practice are unrelated.
