Unanswered: Restore data from live system to Test

    Hi guys,

I'm new to MSMS SQL so any help would be great.

I have two SQL Databases on separate servers, live and test. I have been asked to copy the data from the live system and put it into test. They are SQL Management Studio 2008 running on MS Server 2008R2.

could a simple backup of the database, then copy that file to the test system and restore the database from that point work or it there more to it?

If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be a great help.

    Thanks

Yep, that sounds fine for most scenarios.

If you use SQL Authenticated logins, you may need to re-map those with sp_change_users_login, but you should be mostly fine otherwise.

If it's a regular process, use a script and add it to a SQL Server Agent Job .
Also , when you are taking the backup - from production- and if it's not part of your scheduled backup sequence, use the COPY_ONLY keyword to not break the backup chain.
