Unanswered: Keeping track of database updates

I want a way of keeping track of when a database is updated. Ideally I'd like a field in the main form of a database to update to today's date every time that a field in a record is altered.

Is there a simple way of doing this?

create a trigger in ms access
set a control to be the current datetime
or go the whole hog and use an audit teail such as suggested by Allen Browne and others... google ms access audit trail
I'd rather be riding on the Tiger 800 or the Norton
