    Unanswered: compressing backup file using bzip2

    Hi Guys,
    would there be a loss if i compress and archive 85Gig of dump file using bzip2 format in conjunction with tar?

    At least as far as I know, bzip2 is completely loss-less so (baring bugs) I'd say no there won't be any loss. I've never had any problem compressing a tar archive, although I generally prefer (and therefor use) gzip instead of bzip2.

    thanks for the replied.
    I will be trying to compress large amount of dump files approx 1TB using bzip2 method and remotely copy it to another server.
