    Unanswered: Global edit masterswitch

I'm using 10.5 server on Win10 and I'm creating a parts database for our workshop electronic parts.

As I do not want myself or others to easily edit / destroy information, I wish to put a masterswitch or checkbox on the
form to enable (via password) or disable editing of all the data fields.

I got it partial working using just a checkbox, and using editing fields by rule and check that the checkbox field is 1,
but that only works within one record, so I thought using a global variable would be a good idea, but I can not
    get it working.

I click a button to input a password, and a global variable is changed to "ON" or "OFF" if the input was right or wrong.

Then I set the data fields to be editable by rule, and I insert a rule that the global variable in question should be "ON".
But editing works regardless of the state of the variable, even if I know that it is in the non-editing state by using debug functions
showing the content of the variable. Even tried static variable, same same.

Any clues as to what is wrong, or ideas how to do this differently?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

found the problem, I need to refresh the field(s) in question to use the new edit rule, or select another record.
