    Answered: How can I backup a psql database?

    I am working on upgrading psql v9.1 to 9.6, but have identified that the data is not converted through passive means, that I am aware of at least.

    So I need to:
    Export the data from psql v9.1,
    Modify/update the data to be compatible with v9.6
    --Install psqlv9.6
    Import the data into v9.6

    This was resolved by using the pg_dump command;
    pg_dump -f /location/file -h localhost -p 5432 -U user_name dbname

    A password is then requested and then the file is delivered to location/file
