    Unhappy Unanswered: Oracle 8.1.7 connecting DB through a firewall

    Hiho hiho all!

    I got a little question.

    I'm trying to connect to an Oracle 8i DB through a firewall. I created a port forward by doing:

    ssh -L 1521:<IP of DB-Server>:1521 <IP of firewall-Server>

    then I set up the tnsnames.ora like this:

    db =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = <machine name of DB server>)
    )
    )

    but I always get the following error:

    ORA-12514: TNS:listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given in connect
    descriptor

    Can anyone help me with this?

    Greetings
    Ralf

    P.S.: 'tnsping db' worked.

    Hello.

    Which platform and version are you on?

    Usually what you are experiencing happens (if the firewall is correctly set) on Windows.

    If you are on this platform set in the registry in the key

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\ORACLE

    the value

    USE_SHARED_SOCKET=TRUE

    and restart the listnener.

    On unix environments this is not an issue.

    Also on Win32 there is a problem in 8.1.7: the key is not recognized and you have to patch at least 8.1.7.2

    hope helps,
