I am using Visual Basic 6.0 and ADO 2.6 to call a stored procedure in Oracle 8.1. The stored procedure has an input/output parameter defined as:

pLastUpdUserId IN OUT VARCHAR2

My problem is that when passing a value into this parameter that is smaller that the value that will be returned, I get the error:

ORA-06502 Numeric or Value Error: character string buffer too small.

Does anyone know how to get around this error without having to separate the LastUpdUserId into 2 parameters, an input parameter and an output parameter? Is there any way to prevent the stored procedure from assuming that the input parameter, pLastUpdUserId, can only store values that have the same number of characters, or less, than the value passed?

Thanks in advance for any help.
