Red face Unanswered: Oracle 8i for 2000 installation

I'm having a major issue with my Oracle install from Oracle University. I have 2000 on my computer and the install goes really well until it comes to logging in. I can't log in with any of the default accounts because I don't have a host string. Is there a default host string I'm missing here?
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

You shouldn't need a host string if you're on the local machine. What are you using to connect with. Try the command line version of SQL*Plus. It's in the ORA_HOME/bin directory called sqlplus. Just fire it up from a command prompt by typing
    Code:
    sqlplus sys/change_on_install
Also, check the obvious things, like making sure the oracle services are started.
