Are you doing a local or remote installation? Is this an unattended installation as well?

    similar problem

I have (I believe) the identical problem - I have uninstalled, installed SQL7, attempted the upgrade, and it has not worked either.

Running Win 2000 server with latest service packs, shut down Zone Alarm, shut down McAfee.

I have tried installing with either the SA account or a domain account.

In terms of unuaual things I may have installed - I have shut down services that did not seem particularly useful (so I don't need DHCP server on this server, for example, or SNMP or SMTP).
