    Angry Unanswered: Help! regular crashes!

    Hello everyone.

Oracle is crashing regularly at a site I support. It's rather annoying. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this. Here is the setup:

    WinNT 4.0 SP6a
    Oracle 8.0.6.0.0 standard edition

Was installed two months ago. Removed Oracle 7.3.3 off the machine, and then installed Oracle 8.0.6 to replace it. Since then, it hasn't been happy.
The listener service seems to turn itself off regularly. I have looked at some of the log files, and here is what it says:

    LISTENER.LOG:

    TNS-12560: TNSrotocol adapter error
    TNS-00530: Protocol adapter error
32-bit Windows Error: 38: Filename too long

    orclALRT.LOG:

I have checked the disks for file system errors, bad sectors and the like, but they all are fine. I can't figure out what else would lock that file up.

Please help. This is driving me crazy! (And costing someone lots of money...)
    Thank you very much!

    Lloyd,

For some reason your control file 'C:\ORANT\DATABASE\CTL1ORCL.ORA' is being locked by OS process. On NT that might be any backup program which is backing up the control file by simple locking the file and copying to tape. If in the same time Oracle is trying to write to the control file (advancing the archived logs SCN number, etc) then this error is seen.

Talk to your Sys Admin and tell him not to backup any Oracle files. You could use RMAN instead. What is your backup solution, BTW?

Some users reported the same problem while virus scanning the Oracle files. Make sure you do not scan Oracle files for viruses !!!

Can you post your listener.ora file?
Do you have the appropriate Oracle protocol adapters installed in the following text file ORANT/orainst/nt.rgs?
Try to disable otrace by setting EPC_DISABLED=TRUE on the server.
