    Unanswered: server = dedicated ?

I have Oracle 8.1.7 running on a microsoft2000 box. Some client boxes can connect without a problem. BUt for others we had to add the "server=dedicated" line in the tns entry box to get a connection. MTS is enabled on the server. what is the reasoning behind this entry and what does it do for you?

    Hi Wale,

I had to do the same thing after I set my database up as MTS.
    My client couldn't connect.

The 'server=dedicated' entry means that when you make a connection to the server from that client, you have a dedicated server process dealing with your processing.
With MTS you have users sharing the server process, so you could have 10 users sharing 50 server processes.
I don't know why you have to put it in the TNSNAMES to make a connection though.
    Anyone?
    Good luck.
    Breen.

Are you going through any firewalls?

If you are you have to use dedicated unless your firewall supports a SQLnet proxy.
