Unanswered: Testing Network connectivity to backend database upon login

I remember reading a post where someone said that in a front-end/back-end access setup, when the user first start's up the front-end file, the database runs a check to make sure it can access the back end file.

Does anyone have a code snippet that would be used to verify communication like that, or a suggestion of how to go about it.

    TIA...

still trying to figure out how to ensure the user can access the backend datafile when they first open the database, I need to be able to test if it is either a file path via mapped drive or using a UNC network name...

    Thanks.
