How can I reduce the size of a database, deleting the free space?

It is also possible to shrink the database automatically using the ALTER DATABASE AUTO_SHRINK option. To configure the amount of free space to be removed, such as only 50 percent of the current free space in the database, use the Properties dialog box in SQL Server Enterprise Manager to shrink the database.
The log file can never be shrunk to a size less than the virtual log file. Loads of info in the OnLine books...

You can create an alert to monitor the size of db( in % or MB), if it grows beyond that, set the alert to start a job to shrink db .
