    Unanswered: Slower ESTIMATE STATISTICS

Since moving to Oracle 8.1.7 from 7.3, ESTIMATE STATISTICS is taking 4 times as long (a good 8 hrs) for the same sample and similar volume of data. Could this be attributed to a smaller SORT_AREA_SIZE or are you aware of any other changes in the ANALYZE algorithm?

    Any other ideas?

    Thx

    Cool

You are right - analyzing tables requires sorting to be done. Analyzing indexes does not because the data is already sorted.

It also depends on how and what do you analyze - compute or estimate, table or index.

Larger SORT_AREA_SIZE will contribute to faster excution. IMHO, no major changes in the analyzing procedure.

    Hope that helps,
