    Unanswered: backup problem

    we are using informix 7.3 on windowsNT.
    when I try to connect the database using dbaccess I am getting the error like logical back up is required.

    our configuration file is like this:

    If I ran the command onbar -l
    I am not getting any response.

    so how can I get my server in to run mode.
    pl help me to solve this problem.

    Logical log backup can't start when LTAPEDEV is set to '/dev/null' ,
    before set it to another value you can use command ontape -s (TAPEDEV=/dev/null,LTAPEDEV=/dev/null) to unblock dbserver to continue your dbserver service

    In informix environment the role of logical logs is very important to know. Much is up to you as DBA or up to the management in the company. As long as you have the LTAPEDEV param to NUL, you would not be able to restore ANYTHING but the exact last full backup you have.
    With logical logs backed up as soon as they gets filled up, you would be able to restre the last backup done, and then 'roll-forward' from the logical logs to the point in time where the last backed-up checkpoint accured.

    When the logical logs all are filled up, the instance would stall, waiting for a backup of the logical logs. This could be done in several ways.

    At the command line, with ontape -a or as part of a full backup with
    ontape -s -L 0. You could set the instance to automaticly back up logical logs as they fills up eiter with ontape -c. ( this console window can't be closed ) or with the tool IECC-console if you prefere that.

    Usually you would NOT want to loose your logical logs as you do now by setting LTAPDEV to whatever you would want it on \.\\TAPE0 ie.

    I think the situation is server has been blocked (Blocked:LBU)because can't backup logical log , the first thing must do is continue the service and set logical log backup parameter to protect from can't backup logical log again

    the LTAPEDEV in windows is not /dev/null but nul
    you need to take the service down, edit the onconfig (change tapedev also to nuk) and then restart the service.
