    Post Unanswered: incremental backup

    Hello Friends,

How to take incremental backup in Sybase ASE 11.9.2 on NT?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks in advance.

DUMP TRANSACTION is the ASE command for an
    incremental back-up.

Keep in mind that ASE only allows DUMP TRANSACTION
when the logsegment has its own device and when no
minimally logged activity occured. Usually, the DBA
prevents minimally logged activity on a database by
setting the option "select into/bulkcopy/pllsort" to false.

What DUMP TRANSACTION does is to save the log
contents to file (or tape). Since the log records all
SQL activity, ASE can use it to redo it should the database
be restored. Restore is performed by executing LOAD
DATABASE from a file or tape created by DUMP DATABASE,
then loading all log dump files by several LOAD TRANSACTION
    commands.

Some options of the DUMP TRANSACTION like WITH NOLOG
or WITH TRUNCATE_ONLY do truncate the log instead of
saving it. No new DUMP TRANSACTION to file is possible after
one of those, and recoverability will require to perform a
    new DUMP DATABASE.
