Question Unanswered: Migration from ORA Forms 4.5 to 6i

    Hi,

I've no experiences with ORACLE Forms XXX. Our customer requires a tender from us for migrating a huge ORA Forms 4.5 application to a newer version.

So I have some question to you:

Is version 6i the newest, or which one is the newest?
Must I rewrite each form and modul (>50) ?
Is there any migration-tool on the market, which you recommend?
Does ORA Forms 6i works fine on WIN200 and is it faster as
    Forms 4.5 on Window 3.11 (16 bit)?

    Thanks a lot

The latest version is Developer 9i...6i with some candy. As to a rewrite, it really depends on what your current forms consist of and whether you want them web-enabled. After forms 4.5, successive versions changed (limited) functionality so that web-enabling was easier (they followed more closely the Java Swing look and feel). The forms product itself has a migration tool. As to speed, I don't know! It's been a long time since I've touched 3.11 ;-)

Thanks for your answer Astro (?),

you said, that Forms 6i/9i is Web-based. Doesn't these versions also offer a native client/server archticture as Forms did in version 4.5?
If only Web-Clients are supported, what would you do with VBX-Controls in forms of version 4.5? Our customer wants Unix clients also, which doesn't handle ActiveX.
Which Form-Server would you recommend, a Unix/Solaris or Windows 2000?

    Best regards to you

Yes, you can run them client/server. As to VBX, I don't know the answer...I've been integrating Java with them since 5, but no ActiveX / OLE / etc.........

    Cool

SUN has a Migration Assitant for ActiveX . It converts the ActiveX controls in Java Beans, which should be portable across any platform.

And yes, Developer 9i is the latest version of Forms/Reports and you can run it in both server/client and web-enabled architectures.

    Hope that helps,

I believe Forms 9i is for development of Web Based Applications only. 6i allowed both Client/Server & Web Base Applications to be developed.

    #1 - no. it's the Forms 9i
#2 - no. you can try to compile with the 9i forms, or buy a convertor
    #3 - yes.
#4 - absolutely. every 32-bit application works much faster than 16-bit one
