    Question Unanswered: Allocating database space

    hi,

We have an old Sybase installation and lately been getting a message saying we need to allocate more space for our database.
Since I'm quite a newbie in Sybase, I would appreciate any help on how to do it.

What is the error message? There are two space issues to deal with, the transaction log and the database itself.

If it is the transaction log you need to DUMP TRANSACTION

If it is a non-critical DB you might want to set trunc log on chkpt to TRUE to avoid this in the future.

You need to either ALTER DATABASE your_db to an existing device or create a new one and then alter the DB to it.

The DOCS have all the info you need:

    Thanks,

    Thanks for the fast reply...

Actually I found that the device being used by the database is about 1000MB where the DB is has used almost 90% of the allocated space in the device.
Should I create another device and alter the existing DB into it?
If so I would appreciate some tips on how to...

It is very simple, similar to "create database" command only. To use "alter database" you can refer to the Syntax:

    alter database <database name> [on {default|database_device} [=size] [, database_device [=size]]....] [for load]

Basically, create new devices, and use those device names in the above syntax, like :

    alter database pubs2 on newdevice = 3

will allocate 3 MB to pubs2 database on new device newdevice.

    Thanks,
    Aravind
