I'm sure this has been asked a million times but how can I replace the "#error" message in a report field with some thing else, such as "no records"

Use the NoData event of the Report which is triggered if the RecordSource returns no records. You can then print a message box and cancel the report.

Thanks. I'll give that a try.

Is there a way of just replacing the one field but still showing the blank report?

Try to trap what is causng the error - such a null values.
You can replace the value will an IIF

    =IIf(IsNull([Units]),0,[Units]*[Quantity])

Do you know what the source of the error is?

I sometimes use a text control behind the normal controls which will hold the data, should there be any. In the NoData event, I set the RecordSource for this control to ="No Records to Print" or something similar and then set the RecordSource for the other controls to ="" to stop them printing anything.
