    Hello,

    I'm using Oracle 8.0.5 and have some troubles getting any hits when using it...

    Here is the documentation for SOUNDEX:
    http://technet.oracle.com/docs/produ...114a.htm#78855

    It's a fairly rudimentary algorithm, and will not always find what you want. Particularly, it will only match values that start with the same letter as each other, so will not match SOUNDEX('WRITE') = SOUNDEX('RITE'), because 'W630' <> 'R300'!!!

    These examples were converted by SOUNDEX as follows:

    1) Take out vowels
    WRITE => WRT
    RITE => RT
    2) Take first consonant as is
    W => W
    R => R
    3) Map other consonants to numbers according to rules:
    R => 6
    T => 3
    4) pad with 0's to make length 4:
    WRITE => W630
    RITE => R300
