    Question Unanswered: Starting Postgresql on Redhat 7.3

    I user Redhat 7.3 and i want to user java programs to connect to postgresql database . i have seen the /var/lib/pgsql/data/postmaster.opts and postgresql.conf and pg_hba.conf files but in the postmaster.opts file there is only one line /usr/bin/postmaster and there are no other options.what do i do to specifiy any default options?i couldnot fine postmaster.opts.default file as in redhat 7.0 and in postgresql.conf,pg_hba.conf all the lines are commented what lines should i uncomment so that i can use postgresql to be connected through java programs?and what other measures should i take so that i can connect through java programs like where i can find the jdbc drivers and how to connect them?

    this is my first post here and i am a real newbie when it comes to database server's configuration.
    thanks in advance .

    java + postgresql

    I don't think postgres is compiled with java

    there is a configure option --with-java

    also look at jdbc.postgresql.org

    the only thing is that you must enable tcpip

    2 different ways:

    start the postmaster with the "-i" option
    or
    change the postgresql.conf
    tcpip_socket = true

    i changed the postgresql.conf ,tcpip_socket = true and postgresql is working fine and i can see from netstat -an output that it is using port 5432.i could create a database, create tables and work with some sql statements. as you(eperich) said (and as i read somewhere) postgresql in redhat 7.3 doesnt come with java compiled and i have to compile with ant to get java compatibility!!!
    but i dont want to compile postgresql anew but just get jdbc driver to connect to database.i downloaded
    pgjdbc2 driver( becasue i use java 1.4.1) from http://jdbc.postgresql.org/download.html. please tell me what i can do so as to connect to postgresql database from java programs.

    i really need some help here.
