    Unanswered: best table type ??

I have a table that has mainly 8-10k insert at around 200-300/second.

What is the best table type to use for this type of storage..??
There are the occasional select - which has to be as fast as possible.

    Running:
    Mysql 4.0.7 server
    dual P3 700 512MB ram and 250GB (scsi 3) storage.....

    Your advise is most appreciated

    Are they concurrent inserts?
    Random or batches of inserts?
    Is the data critical?

For maximum data security, InnoDB is the way to go. A commited transaction is never lost and 'point in time' recovery is possible.

Selects can run unhindered regardless of whether the table type is InnodB or MyISAM. The write locks will not interfere in any way.

If multiple concurrent updates are required, then InnoDB is your best bet. If the data is inserted in sequential batches and you don't need the transactional support, then MyISAM will generally give better performance.

If in doubt... go with InnoDB.

insert are from a c prog and not done via a batch . Is batch better ??
    How is it done???

and the data is critical - sorta if a "small" portion is lost we have the data in flatfile format that is backup up, BUT we need to be able to query it.....

    Thanks
