Are they concurrent inserts?
Random or batches of inserts?
Is the data critical?
For maximum data security, InnoDB is the way to go. A commited transaction is never lost and 'point in time' recovery is possible.
Selects can run unhindered regardless of whether the table type is InnodB or MyISAM. The write locks will not interfere in any way.
If multiple concurrent updates are required, then InnoDB is your best bet. If the data is inserted in sequential batches and you don't need the transactional support, then MyISAM will generally give better performance.
