    Question Unanswered: Concatinating Text Datatype

    Hello

I am trying to insert into a text field by concatinating several strings together

    eg
    insert into texttable (textfield)
    select lastname + firstname + "hardstring" + ....... from .....

however it seems to cut off at 255 characters.

Is there anything else I can do to build the text field ?

Also I notice that in SQL Advantage, even when there is a large text field insert eg 500 chars, only 255 are displayed (yet when an associate used tsql you could see entire value) is there are way to ensure all is displayed?

    Thanks
    Mark

    Re: Concatinating Text Datatype

You can't create wide strings (ie strings that go beyond 255 chars) in ASE 12.0 or earlier. TEXT datatypes have always had this limitation, and the assumption has always been that any processing would be done in a client app.

If you upgrade to 12.5 (or later) the maximum string size goes to 16k, which makes things a little easier for small TEXT columns.

    Hiya Mark,

You can store data in multiple columns and then concatenate it at the client end.

    Cheers
