Unanswered: Sybase 11.9 and Auto Incrementing

I have several tables with auto incrementing fields. I use the field to have a definite unique record in the table. If the server is rebooted (NT go figure) it totally botches the count. For instance it may be a rec num 1050 then after a reboot it jumps to 500000001 ? ? ? Why does this happen? Is there a better way? Should I not use the auto incrementing field?

Thanks in advance for your help

You can minimize the problem by 1) shutting down ASE cleanly before rebooting the machine, and 2) setting the "identity burning set" value to 1 (via sp_configure).

In ASE 12.x you can specify a maximum gap for identity values...

Also, read up on identity values in the ASE System Administration manual for more information.

    That did the trick...

Thanks, your suggestion to shutdown cleanly seemed to do the trick. I didn't realize they were just restarting to OS without bringing the database down first .
