Unanswered: HP Unix : Async/Sync I/O prob. during backups

    Hi all,

here is another problem we had today. SOmething critical, hence if you have any ideas, please shoot them immediately.

    The Env.

    Adaptive Server Enterprise/12.5.0.1/SWR 10518 ONE-OFF/P/HP9000-829/HP-UX 11.0/rel12501/1778/32-bit/FBO/Fri Jul 19 01:32:02 2002

We have a DB of size 117 Gb created on raw partitions and I tried dumping it to 50 stripes after increasing the backup server paameters. The dump goes thru, but I get the following message and also the performance degrades considerably with WARNING in the backup.log
Looks like this problem is more specific to HP Unix(based on google search):

"Jan 28 13:33:46 2003: D15: SYBMULTBUF WARNING: Unable to initialize Async IO on the database device '/dev/raw_sybase7/rsyb1'. Operating System call open failed with error code = 16 , Message= Device busy, State= 61.
Jan 28 13:33:46 2003: D15: SYBMULTBUF WARNING: Backup Server is using Synchronous I/O for device '/dev/raw_sybase7/rsyb1' which will cause significant performance degradation.
Jan 28 13:33:46 2003: D15: SYBMULTBUF WARNING: Unable to initialize Async IO on the database device '/dev/raw_sybase7/rsyb2'. Operating System call open failed with error code = 16 , Message= Device busy, State= 61.
Jan 28 13:33:46 2003: D15: SYBMULTBUF WARNING: Backup Server is using Synchronous I/O for device '/dev/raw_sybase7/rsyb2' which will cause significant performance degradation."

    Any ideas are welcome.

    regards,
    subrahmanyam

    Hi,

thanks alot for your continuous support.
I have been having lots of problems, so was posting more and more.
Anyway, I guess the slowness was due to the compress option(9) and no. of stripes(used 50) I used .
Anyway, the aync i/o part does not still explain. I take your inputs and see if I could implement this sometime. It is not possible to sutdown prod. box during week-days.

    regards,
    subrahmanyam
