Question Unanswered: ORA-01034 Oracle not available

    Hi,

I installed Oracle 8i on my computer and it set up the sample database etc. and I could log on and create queries. However, when I shutdown my computer and restarted, the database was no longer available. I created an additional database and this was working fine until I shutdown the computer again(!).
As my explanation above demonstrates I am not too familiar with the workings of Oracle and was hoping someone could tell me if there is a solution to the problem described above?

    Any help would be appreciated,

    Regards,

    C.

You need to restart the database. On Windows XP, this is done via the control panel "Services" option. Locate the service called "Oracle Server XXX" and click on "Start". You can set it up to start automatically whenever the computer is started.

When you create Oracle Instances the oradim -STARTMODE parameter was manual. That's why the service is not restarting on machine reboot.

It's easy to modify this. Go to the MS-DOS command prompt and type:

    c:\>set oracle_sid="FIRST_SID_NAME"
c:\>oradim -EDIT -SID "SID_NAME" -STARTMODE auto

(don't use the double quotes " ". they are just to show you what to modify)

Do that for both instances and next time when you reboot your box, Oracle will come up automatically.

    Hope that helps,
