    Unanswered: Oracle 8.1.7 on RH Linux 7.3 --> ORA-27121

    After installing Oracle 8.1.7 on RH Linux 7.3 and while trying to startup nomount I get the following error:

    "ORA-27121: unable to determine size of shared memory segment
    Linux Error: 13: Permission denied"

    Can anyone please help? It has been difficult to find any information that has been helpful. Notes follow on the steps taken to install and other misc info...

    --> Notes on install:
    =====================
    1.) Installed 6.2 compatibility packages for Linux
    2.) Installed JDK 118 from blackdown
    3.) I installed Oracle as normal -without creating a database- but added the export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 and ./usr/i386-glibc21-linux/bin/i386-glibc21-linux-env.sh lines before running the installer.
    4.) Recieved error messages while trying to link ... then proceeded to open another terminal and unpacked and installed glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz
    5.) Returned to install and attempted to relink --> after SEVERAL repeated attempts of #1-5 this process finally worked sucessfully.
    6.) Attempted to start a custom db in nomount and got error above.
    7.) verified "sticky bit" baseed on some web lead --> permissions look like,
    -rwsr-s--x 1 oracle oinstall 25673086 Mar 7 17:02 oracle
    =====================

    --> Also, .bash_profile for user oracle looks like ...
    =====================
    # User specific environment and startup programs
    ORACLE_SID=PINTO; export ORACLE_SID
    ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle; export ORACLE_BASE
    ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/8.1.7; export ORACLE_HOME
    ORACLE_ADMIN=$ORACLE_BASE/admin/$ORACLE_SID; export ORACLE_ADMIN

    PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:$ORACLE_HOME/bin; export PATH
    CLASSPATH=.:$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib/classes111.zip; export CLASSPATH
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib; export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5; export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL
    source /usr/i386-glibc21-linux/bin/i386-glibc21-linux-env.sh

    unset USERNAME
    =====================

    Thank you in advance - Kristina
