Unhappy Unanswered: Linked table ( to a DBF file)

    Hi,

I create a new database and then link to table call mx.dbf

Because all numerical fields in mx are in double format and I want zip code to be integer, I open the design view to change. But Access gives me an error saying "linked table cannot be modified"

Could anybody help me with this? Or show me an alternative solution.

    Appreciate.

Not sure what a dbf file is but thats probably my ignorance. The thing that I have seen with linked tables is that if u want to make a change to the table structure you have to do it in the origianl source.

    Hope that helps

you cannot edit the design of a linked table.

if you are trying to address a file-size problem ...bad luck! talk to mx's owner: double is a strange choice for a zip but maybe there's a max integer size problem in the dbf source app

BTW zip as integer/double is restrictive - some countries (e.g. UK) include alphas in their zip codes
