Unanswered: trying to run SQLPlus for the first time

I just installed oracle 8.17 and when I launch SQL Plus it prompts me for username, password, host string. I can't seem to login. I looked in my tnsnames.ora and I know that my service name is
    SERVICE_NAME = myDevMC.home

Can someone help me out here?

do you have a listener process running for your SID myDevMC.home

check lsnrctl stat otherwise start the listener lsnrctl start

check sqlnet.ora for your env .home ...
check the tnsnames.ora for your sid

the three files are located $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin

you may need to start the listener manually. (You seem to have to do this on win98 with personal oracle).

the command should be LSNRCTL from the command prompt, then type START to fire up the default listener

    login help

I looked up the listener in my services snap-in in the MMC and it is running. Is there a difference if I used one of the 2 following login credentials. I used the login

    username: system
    password: manager@myDevMC.home
    host string: -(left it blank)-

    and i get

    ERROR:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name

    if I use

    username: system
    password: manager
    host string: -(left it blank)-

    and i get

    Connected to:
    Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.0.0 - Production
    With the Partitioning option
    JServer Release 8.1.7.0.0 - Production
