In the log the buildmaster command should be listed -- run this command from the command line manually and see if that works.
    Thanks,

Check the sybase user you have created has access to that directory. srvbuild may not have been able to create the master device.

    Hi,

The core dump is worrying, but the message "Requested server name not found." indicates the interfaces file ($SYBASE/interfaces) either cannot be read or doesn't contain the a valid entry. May be this is a symptom of the problem, rather than the cause.

    Richard.

When the configuration fails, it copies the contents of $SYBASE/interfaces to $SYBASE/interf.old

    The $SYBASE/interf.old looks like

    one4allredsrv
    master tcp ether one4all-redsrv 4100
    query tcp ether one4all-redsrv 4100

Could the problem be with the GNU library
    currently we have glibc-2.3.2-4.80 installed

    but the Sybase system requirements
    are for kernal 2.4.X
    glibc-2.2.4-13

    regards

I was actually looking for, and requesting you run, the buildmaster command.
    Thanks,

ASE 12.5 doumentation states that it no longer uses buildmaster to build the master device. That functionality has been incorporated into the dataserver binary.

I have used the dataserver binary to generate a master device and it
    cores dumps

    /opt/sybase-12.5/ASE/bin/dataserver -d/opt/sybase-12.5/databases/master.dat -b30M -z2k -sone4allredsrv -e/opt/sybase-12.5/ASE/install/one4allredsrv.log

    regards

huh, things change I guess. Sorry about that. I'd log a case with sybase support. Is your LD_LIBRARY_PATH env. variable set correctly?
    Thanks,

    Matt

    my LD_LIBRRAY_PATH is set to

    $SYBASE/$SYBASE_ASE/lib:
    $SYBASE/$SYBASE_OCS/lib:
    $SYBASE/$SYBASE_FTS/lib:
    $SYBASE/SQLRemote /lib

I think your glibc may be 'too high' for ASE. We had similar problems when we tried to upgrade one of our FreeBSD boxes (could not read master) and when we rolled the upgrade back ASE worked fine. Apparently a lib changed in a significant way and ASE puked.
    Thanks,

    Matt
