    Unanswered: Urgent help needed

    Hi,

I need to restore the Oracle database from a dump file. We are running Oracle 8.1.6 and we have a dump file and a CONTROL1.ORA file. I'm new to Oracle, so any Restore script and help is greatly appriciated in advance.

Is this dump file an Oracle export??? Do you have the instance
and database created and just need to replace the data? Do you
need to replace a single schema or the entire database?

If the "dump" file is an Oracle Export, then you will be using the
Oracle Import utility to rebuild the database. If you have a lot of
data, I would build the database structure and have a LARGE rollback
segment as the only online segment available for the import. If you
are running in Archivelog mode, you might consider going noarchivelog
    mode for the import.

The dump file is an Oracle export. So I should simply use the Import facility??

You will use the Oracle Import Utility to reload, but how much
reloading are you going to do...

    Do you have the instance
and database created and just need to replace the data? Do you
need to replace a single schema or the entire database?

I would have the instance created, build the database and place
the tablespaces where you want them (unless you plan on the
import to build them for you in the same directory that they were
    originally in).

    Then either:
    imp .... full=y ignore=y (for full reload)
fromuser = username ignore=y for a single schema
    etc...

There are other things to consider as well ...

The database is created but none of the tables are created inside. We have a production dump xyz.dmp file and we just want to import it to the new DB. Last time we tried the import utility under the Management server and we got the error "Import.Log" file or directory doesn't exist.
    Any help?

Use the Oracle IMP Utility from the command prompt. Specify as
one of the parameters IGNORE=Y. IGNORE=Y says to ignore any
errors and continue with the import. The message that you are
getting tells me that IMP is trying to create the tablespace files
in a directory that does not exists (the directory structure is
different from what it was when the EXPORT took place.

By using IGNORE=Y, the import will give you warning messages
(ie, could not create file), but will continue to load tables into the
tablespaces that they came from. (Ensure the tablespace names
are the same as what they were before and you will be ok...
