Hello,
Oracle offered the LONG RAW data type to store binary data within a row. This involved overhead of 1 byte (if the raw has <= 250 byte length) or 3 byte if the raw had up to 64 KB, similar to other column types.

Oracle strongly recommends to use BLOBs now. Blobs however have additional 36 byte overhead, and use multiples of the block size if stored out of row (DISABLE STORAGE IN ROW option).

Is there an alternative to LONG RAW which is not discontinued and has the same compact storage?

Best regards,
Michael

P.S.: I'm using Oracle versions 8.0.5 to 9i.
