    Unanswered: Problem with connecting to Oracle from TOAD

    i haven't been able to figure this out...its gotta be something really simple, but no matter what i do, i keep getting "ORA-12535: TNSperation timed out"
    I would appreciate step-by-step instructions if any of you can do that for me, please?!

    Here's my setup:
    WinXP PC, Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition and everything is working just fine except for TOAD. I connect via SQL Plus or from an ASP web page just beautifully.

    Thank you in advance

    Hi,

    have you tried the SqlNet Help button at the bottom of the login page? It isn't purely traditional 'help' - you can set different Oracle homes, get Toad's advice on your tnsnames.ora, which one it is using etc.

    i am new to toad and oracle. any help with my oracl/toad issue will be appreciated. i have oracle 8i EE on a winXP pro computer. sql plus works fine and my web apps can access orace (from ASP). toad's SQL*Help's advice tells me that there are no problems with the SQL*Net installation.

    The Current Oracle Registry window shows:
    Oracle Root, Home0 and Home1
    i've made Home1 my default toad home
    i keep getting the error: ORA-12535: TNSperation timed out
    the details show as follows:
    oci.dll found
    2) Oracle Home Key is SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME1
    Looking for TNS_ADMIN environmental variable
    TNS_ADMIN environmental variable doesnt exist,
    looking for TNS_ADMIN reg key using home key: >SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME1<
    TNS_ADMIN does not exist in SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME1
    looking for TNS_ADMIN reg key in \Oracle: >SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME1<
    Looking for OracleHomeKey\ORACLE_HOME
    Oracle Path is now C:\Oracle\Network\Admin
    Looking for C:\Oracle\Network\Admin\tnsnames.ora
    tnsnames.ora found
    tnsnames entry: MYTESTDB
    tnsnames entry: INST1_HTTP
    tnsnames entry: EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA
    tnsnames entry: FORTOAD
    tnsnames.ora found
    tnsnames entry: MYTESTDB
    tnsnames entry: INST1_HTTP
    tnsnames entry: EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA
    tnsnames entry: FORTOAD

    ---------
    i've even added a new TNS entry into the TNSNAMES.ORA file on c:\oracle\admin (copied and pasted an existed TNS entry but renamed it)

    here's how it looks in the TNS file:

    # TNSNAMES.ORA Network Configuration File: C:\Oracle\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.

    ALIYAH =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myCOMPUTERNAME)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = db1.salamgroup)
    )
    )

    INST1_HTTP =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myCOMPUTERNAME)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = SHARED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = db1.salamgroup)
    (PRESENTATION = http://admin)
    )
    )

    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =

    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =

    (PRESENTATION = RO)
    )
    )

    FORTOAD =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myCOMPUTERNAME)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = db1.salamgroup)
    )
    )

    Hi,

    It looks like all is in order although Toad is finding a tnsnames entry called mytestdb, but your tnsnames.ora doesn't list one?

    If that isn't the problem I can only suggest you try the toad forums, this might get you started....

    http://www.toadsoft.com/toadhelp/toa...rver_login.htm

    I have used many different versions of toad on many different os's and oracle versions without problem. I would therefore point to a Net8 or SqlNet problem, but if you're connecting fine via SqlPlus then I'm not sure.
