    I was able to import your Excel spreadsheet into Access 2000 after I made the following changes to your file:

    1) Added column heading to blank cell A1
    2) Inserted blank row under column headings and copied text into each cell of this "dummy" record, from cell A2 to IO2. This makes every field a text field when imported into Access.
    3) Deleted non-data column beyond column IO.

    You can delete the dummy record from your table.

    thanks, if your wondering why i'm importing such evil data it's so i can run the following code on it

    Sub maketable() 'yr)
    Dim field As Long
    DoCmd.SetWarnings False
    For field = DateSerial(yr, 1, 1) To DateSerial(yr, 1, 1) + 242
    DoCmd.RunSQL "INSERT INTO test ( [tool], [date] ,[weight] ) SELECT Field1, " & field & ", [" & Format(field, "d-mmm-yy") & "] FROM DailyMonitoringInputFromJan2003 WHERE ([" & Format(field, "d-mmm-yy") & "]<>"""") AND ([" & Format(field, "d-mmm-yy") & "] not like ""REPORT"");"
    Next
    DoCmd.SetWarnings True
    End Sub

    and presto nice usable data
