I've got a multi-user Access 97 database split into front-ends (on individual PCs) and a data back-end on a server (a seperate PC used only for this, back-end in a shared folder). It is almost exclusively used for data-entry rather than looking things up or editing existing records. Edited record locks are used.

The problem is that occasionally when users add a new record and try to start entering data they get a record locking message saying that the record is locked by a random user. This is not limited to just two users and on occasion has happened to all but 1 user simultaneously. It also happens more when a higher number of users are entering data.

I thought I understood basic record locking but cant understand why this would happen when new records are added.

Any help would be greatly appreciated to eliminate this.
