Unanswered: Problems in Alert log and Trace files

    Hai all,

I am using Oracle 8.1.5 on a Solaris OS.I just recently noticed that in my alert_log file I recive some messages as follows:

    Current log# 1 seq# 451 mem# 1: /u02/oradata/pss/redo2aPSS.log
    Fri Jun 13 01:22:59 2003
    ARCH: Beginning to archive log# 2 seq# 450
    Fri Jun 13 01:22:59 2003
    ARC0: received prod
    Fri Jun 13 01:22:59 2003
    ARC0: Beginning to archive log# 2 seq# 450
    ARC0: Failed to archive log# 2 seq# 450
    Fri Jun 13 01:23:01 2003
    ARCH: Completed archiving log# 2 seq# 450

Its seems ok ,but why does it specify "Failed to archive" at the 3rd line from bottom. Is this some indication to any problem or is it just normal.

Also when i checked my trace file i found the following:

    *** 2003.06.10.01.23.27.000
    ARC0: Failed to archive log# 1 seq# 447 thrd# 1
    *** 2003.06.11.01.22.27.000
    ARC0: Begin archiving log# 2 seq# 448 thrd# 1
    ARC0: VALIDATE
    ARC0: PREPARE
    ARC0: NOTARCHIVED, lock_busy
    *** 2003.06.11.01.22.27.000
    ARC0: Failed to archive log# 2 seq# 448 thrd# 1
    *** 2003.06.12.01.23.39.000
    ARC0: Begin archiving log# 1 seq# 449 thrd# 1
    ARC0: VALIDATE
    ARC0: PREPARE
    ARC0: NOTARCHIVED, lock_busy
    *** 2003.06.12.01.23.39.000
    ARC0: Failed to archive log# 1 seq# 449 thrd# 1
    *** 2003.06.13.01.22.59.000
    ARC0: Begin archiving log# 2 seq# 450 thrd# 1
    ARC0: VALIDATE
    ARC0: PREPARE
    ARC0: NOTARCHIVED, lock_busy
    *** 2003.06.13.01.22.59.000
    ARC0: Failed to archive log# 2 seq# 450 thrd# 1

what is this message regarding. What is lock_busy and WHy is it not archived.I don't know this.Is it some performance issue regarding the archiver process.

Please help me in this .

    Thank you

    Micky

    Hai ,thanks for the responce.

But when i check the archive destination it always shows no file..When i check the v$archived_log file i get a whole list of files that have been archived.

actually where are these files archived to.

Daily i have a backup that archive the archive log files and deletes them. But what about the archive files created after the backup and the next backup.they should be there.

    I am a bit confused

    Hi micky,

I supouse you have check that your instance is runnign in archivelog mode, aren't you? (check v$instance or V$database)

If your database is running in archivelog mode, You can test this and check where the archive logs are:
    -show parameter archivelog_dest
Force a change of active redo logfile:
    - alter system switch logfile;
Lock at the archivelog primary destination becouse the archivelog must be there.
