    Unanswered: compressed dump and logical device names

    Hello,

    Since ASE 12-5, a compressed mode is available :

    dump mybase to 'compress::9::/tmp/mydump'

    Dumping to a logical dump device instead to an explicit file path like :

    dump mybase to mydumpdevice

    allows you to change the dump file repository ( disk ) without your dump scripts having to be aware of any change.

    How then to use the compressed mode ??The following :

    dump mybase to compress::9::mydumpdevice

    ends with "Incorrect syntax near 'compress'"

    If I am reading the docs right you can only dump to a local filesystem when you compress.

    How did you define your logical device?

    Did you try enclosing the compress...dumpdevice in quotes?
    Thanks,

    Matt

    I've use Sybase central but I think it does the same as sp_adddumpdevice :
    you give your logical name and your OS path for a file.

    Yes. But it failed as well.

    Your dump command itself is incorrect
    dump mybase to 'compress::9::/tmp/mydump' is not the correct syntax.

    dump database pubs2 to "compress::9::/usr/u/willy/pubs2.dmp"

    Cheers

    Re: compressed dump and logical device names

    Currently the compressed dump do not support dumpdevice.
    Hopefully next year we will have the compression moved inside
    the backupserver and you can issue commands like
    dump database db1 with compression level=1, password=something, encryption=on
