Question Unanswered: Help with a query

    hello,

im trying to create a query which copies 10 characters from one column (called ADDRESS_L3) and puts it in another (SHORT_NAME). These columns are in the same table

i have been looking around for a while and cant seem to find anything simular to help me do this.

any help is very much appreciated

Create an update query that updates [NewField] to Left([OldField],10)

call me old fashioned if you like, but why would you want to have the first ten chars in a field when you can create them on the fly when you need them?

CCC's Left([OldField],10) is of course correct (... or left$ maybe), but you can do that any time when you need it.

don't mess up your tables with duplicate data that must, inevitably, get out of sync sooner or later when you, your code, or your user screw up.

Agree, unless an index is needed on that particular field?
