What do you get when you (from os level):

    c:\> svrmgrl
    svrmgrl> set instance ora817nt
    svrmgrl> connect internal/xxxx@ora817nt

if problem still exists .... check you path

    c:\> path

Ensure that your D:\oracle\ora817\bin is close to first ...

Also - Do you have another tnsnames.ora anywhere in your path?

I have seen very similar behaviour when I try to connect to a DB with svrmgrl when I am logged into a Win2K server using a terminal server connection. Are you invoking svrmgrl from the console itself?

    Wink

yes it happen this way if you're dealing with the terminal server, is a bug, try to create a direct access on your desktop from the svrmgr utility , i can enter from there without problems.
    Good luck !

Yes, actually I was using terminal services to connect to the server.
Now when I am using the console to connect to the database I am getting the following error.

    C:\Documents and Settings\oracle>svrmgrl
