Red face Unanswered: ORA-12154 tns:could not resolve service name

I have been trying to figure this one out for some time now. I finally gave up and decided to ask here.

I am getting the following error:
ORA-12154 tns:could not resolve service name

I have checked out tnsnames.ora and everything looks good.

I have Oracle 9i running on RedhatLinux 9. Everything runs great, BUT when I can only connect as sys or system via SQLPLUS and TORA. I cannot connect as a user which I created which I gave dba, sysoper, resource, and connect roles.

I am not sure why it cannot "resolve the service name" for this user if it CAN for sys/system users.

I CAN connect as this user via Oracle Enterprise Manager Console and my Orion Application server. Does this make sense to anyone?

    Any idea why? Please help!

    Thanks in Advance...

oracle provides two files listener.ora and tnsnames.ora and a service listener which listens for incomming requests.

figure out if the listener is running with lsnrctl stat otherwise start with lsnrctl start

within the two files there should be entries for your SID by default ORCL

    Thanks for the reply...

I've looked over both these files and it looks like Oracle generated them correctly. Also, I had started this command like this:

    lsnrctl start

    I get four of these:

    Service "sidname.domain" has 1 instance(s).
Instance "sidname", status UNKNOWN, has 1 handler(s) for this service...

(It does not really say sidname.domain)

    Then it reads:
    The command completed successfully

    Still stumped!
