Unanswered: I cant get MySql v.4.1.0 alpha to work properly

I followed everything in the readme.1st files that came along with the 4.1.0 binary files to upgrade from 3.* to 4.1, but I cant get mysql to work as a service. I am able to get inside mysql and use it, but I dont have any permissions to access my previous databases and tables.

    When I did: c:\mysql\bin>mysqld-opt --skip-grant-tables
it hangs forever and nothing happens. I would have to close the Command prompt window to exit.

When I tried to run the provided script to fix the privilege tables:
    c:\mysql\bin> mysql < c:\mysql\scripts\mysq_fix_privilege_tables.sql
I get this error: "ERROR 1046 at line 1: No Database Selected"

When inside Mysql, and I try to do anything at the mysql> prompt, I keep on getting the error: "Error 1044: Access denied for user: '@127.0.0.1'...."

However, if I do c:\mysql\bin>mysqladmin -u root shutdown, and I do c:\mysql\bin>mysql immediately after that, I am able to use it perfectly (and being able to access all my existing databases). However, the problem is that it's not running as a service. Everything I reboot the computer I would have to go thru this whole process again to get it running correctly. How can I fix this problem. Again, I have trying to make MySQL 4.1.0 alpha work on windows 2000. thanks.

You should use mysql [option] < dbname script.sql
