    Unanswered: schema, help!

I have the ordinary backup (files set) from an oracle 7i database. I want to extract the schema of this database in Oracle 9i R2.

    Is is practicable?

    Thanks in advance

sorry missread you notes. As you only have files you need to set up an 7th version oracle server an guide to the recovery process

In that case, what is the appropriate guide to set up such a database?

I think you are lost then; I know of no procedure extracting schema data out of backed up datafiles ..

Can you get the DBA of the Oracle 7 database to do an export which you could then import into your 9i database. Alternatively install Oracle 7 and then restore the database from the files.

AFAIK no; because the rdbms engines behave different

Can you setup a database link to the Oracle 7 database? Then you could copy the schema (and data?) that way. If you want to use the backup files you need Oracle 7 installed on your box.

When you say a database link? I suppose that you mean i have to set up an apache server? Otherwise, could you clarify this procedure?

there is a sql command 'create database link' which sets up a link between two oracle databases. Using this you can query the remote database using sql by just appending the link name to the table/view name i.e. select * from scott.emp@remotedb where remotedb is the name of the database. You will also need to ensure you have the remote database specified in the tnsnames.ora on your own server and that your server can 'talk' to the remote server using sqlplus (i.e. sqlplus system/manager@remotedb). See the oracle docs on create database link for more info.
