Unanswered: please critique my plan to upgrade to DB2 8.1

Here is my plan to upgrade DB2 from 7.2 to 8.1 please critique thanks
right now not sure if we do 32 bit or 64bit for both aix and db2
    still in initial planning stages

    scott

    1. Plan logical disk volume & AIX filesystem layouts

    2. AIX O/S Installation Process and tuning AIX parameters for DB2 8.1-

    3. Run upgrade utility
Fix problems with migration errors reported by DB2

    4. Upgrade DB2 database server

    5. Upgrade DB2 clients

    6. Install latest DB2 UDB 8.1 Fixpacks

    7. Test DB2 stored procedures with new DB2 8.1 upgrade

    8. Test data loads from suppliers

This seems to work fine for a new installation but to upgrade an instance

    0. Full database and SYSTEM backup

    1. Plan logical disk volume & AIX filesystem layouts (should already be layout from v7 database)(but you can change and move around in v8)

1.1 Makre sure pre-req for V8 are done, like makeing sure you have 2 gig of disk space in /usr/opt

    2. AIX O/S Installation Process and tuning AIX parameters for DB2 8.1-

    3. Run upgrade utility
Fix problems with migration errors reported by DB2

    4. Install DB2 database server

    5. Install DB2 clients

    6. Install latest DB2 UDB 8.1 Fixpacks on server/client

6.1 Migrate the database from v7 to v8
    a) db2imigr -u db2sid db2sid (run for each client too)
    b) start db2 run migrate database sid

    6.2 Run post migration activities.
    a) Rebind db2 packages
    b) Update system catalog statics
    c) Covert all indexes to new type 2
    d) misc stuff

    7. Test DB2 stored procedures with new DB2 8.1 upgrade

    8. Test data loads from suppliers

Another thing to consider is a backout plan ... You backout plan should cater to the following scenarios:

    1) You find problems in the post migration testing phase

    2) You find problems afer getting your migrated system into production

    Cheers

    thanks will do

Thanks for your input, yeah upgrades can get messy and a backout contingency plan is essential.

Are you going to upgrade both aix and db2? We're on aix 433 and udb eee 7.2 fp 7, both 32 bit. aix 433 support runs out in Dec and UDB 7 sometime next year. We are also in the planning stage. Some think that it is too much of a risk to do both aix and db2 since it will be difficult to isolate which layer issues are arising from. On the other hand the size of the DW will increase the outages involved and there will be a lot of testing overlap. Any recommendations, experts?

    both aix and db2 upgrade

we will upgrade both aix and db2 so its a big project. The AIX upgrade will be performed first from 4.3.3 to 5.2 AIX since IBM stops support by end of this year for AIX 4.x. DB2 will be from 7.2 to 8.1 or 8.2 since we purchased the software already. Thanks for your input I just need to carefully plan since its a major undertaking.
