Question Unanswered: unknown user id mysql

    hello everybody,

i'm new to this forum and having a little trouble with the running of mySQL v4 on a SUN Solaris 8 system.

i've successfully downloaded and installed mySQL locally on my workstation (using root privileges).

now when I attempt to start the mySQL daemon with:

    ./bin/mysqld_safe &

i keep getting the following error:

    chown: unknown user id mysql

i am aware that i have to chown the software to the user who installs the software, and that's what i did. but i still keep getting this same weird error.

can someone please help me? thanks !!!!

ps: i have searched the forums as well as the archive and didn't find any info on this!

    TIA for your help! ;-)

It mean that MySql run under an os account generaly mysql
You need to create this user and the group and to change owner data dir to make mysql work

    Lightbulb

    actually you are right.
i cannot run mysql under root.
so i chown the directory to an existing user (a new user can be created for that too).
and now it works. thanks omiossec !
