    Unanswered: Changing Machine Name

Quick question. We already have SQL 2000 running on a machine on which we need to change the machine name. Will this cause a problem with the inner workings of SQL Server? Will it have to be reinstalled or is there a stored procedure available to make the change in SQL server (if necessary)?

    you will have to run

    sp_dropserver <old_name>
    go
    sp_addserver <new_name>

Also, if you have created jobs under the old name you will have to rename the originating server (in sysjobs in MSDB) or you will not be able to edit them.
