Unanswered: 8.1.7 on RH7.3 database creation problems.

    Hi There,

I am trying to create a database manually in Redhat 7.3 running Oracle 8.1.7.

I have installed Oracle with out any apparent problems on the system. Now when I try to physically create the database I am getting errors. The steps that I am following are:

    1. Set the Linux environment

    ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_BASE and PATH in the .bash_profile.

    2. Set SID

    ORACLE_SID=TEMPUS2; export ORACLE_SID

    3. Start instance:

    $svrmgrl
    SVRMGR> connect internal/oracle
    SVRMGR> connected
    SVRMGR>startup nomount pfile=/sdc1/tempus2/pfile/inittempus2.ora
    instance started
    ORA-01012: not logged in

** I am not sure why I am getting this oracle error here? Reading the documentation that I have found, indicates that is should only get the above line svrmgr>instance started.

I have another RH7.3 machine here with Oracle 8.1.7 on it and when I try the above on it, and it starts up without any issues.

    4. Attempt to create database

    SVRMGR> exit
    $svrmgrl
    SVRMGR>connect internal/oracle
    SVRMGR> shutdown abort
    instance shutdown
    SVRMGR> @/sdc1/tempus2/create/tempus.sh
MGR-01507: unable to open file tempus2.log
    CREATE DATABASE TEMPUS2
    *
    ORA-01012 not logged in.

** Where the file that I am attempting to execute is:

    SPOOL tempus2.log
    STARTUP NOMOUNT PFILE=/sdc1/tempus2/pfile/inittempus2.ora
    CREATE DATABASE TEMPUS2
    MAXLOGFILE 5
    MAXLOGMEMBERS 5
    MAXDATAFILES 100
    MAXLOGHITORY 100
    LOGFILE
    GROUP 1 ('/sdb1/tempus1/mlnc1a.rdo','/sdb1/tempus1/mlnc1b.rdo') size 5M,
    GROUP 2 ('/sdb1/tempus1/mlnc2a.rdo','/sdb1/tempus1/mlnc2b.rdo') size 5M,
    GROUP 3 ('/sdb1/tempus1/mlnc3a.rdo','/sdb1/tempus1/mlnc3b.rdo') size 5M
    DATAFILE
    '/sdb1/tempus1/system.dbf' SIZE 400M AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 5M
    CHARACTER SET WE8ISO8859P1

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this may occur on one machine and not the other?

My ultimate aim is to create 4 database instances on this machine, can anyone see anything wrong with what I am doing?

PS, I know that 8.1.7 is not supported by Oracle on RH7.3 but it is what I have to work with for now.

Re: 8.1.7 on RH7.3 database creation problems.

    My problem regarding the error:
    ORA-01012: not logged in

was resolved when I found out that my NLS_LANG environment variable was set incorrrectly. Once I removed this from .bash_profile (I had set it there previously), I was able to connect.

I gave up on running the create database script, and instead did it the log way by typing it out via server manager. This has created the database, system.dbf file, control files and redo logs, however, I am now hit with the error:

    SVRMGR> startup pfile=/sdc1/tempus2/pfile/inittempus2.ora
    ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 72704160 bytes
    Fixed Size 73888 bytes
    Variable Size 55681024 bytes
    Database Buffers 16777216 bytes
    Redo Buffers 172032 bytes
    ORA-01990: error opening password
    file '/sda1/oracle/product/8.1.7.0.1/dbs/orapw'

If I try and look for this file, it does not exist! I cannot find it anywhere on the system.

Do I need to create a password file? if so how do I do it in Linux? I am a bit of a Linux/Oracle newbie.

    Thanks.

    ORA-01403 on startup of database

    ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 72704160 bytes
    Fixed Size 73888 bytes
    Variable Size 55681024 bytes
    Database Buffers 16777216 bytes
    Redo Buffers 172032 bytes
    Database Mounted
    ORA-01403: No Data Found

The initial database creation was incomplete due to errors such as:

ORA-00603: ORACLE server session terminated by fatal error
ORA-01990: error opening password file <name>
    ORA-00600: internal error code

which were ignored at the time of the database creation. Since data population into props$ table happens at the end of database creation, incomplete database creation will not populate this table hence this above error.

    Solution Description:
    ---------------------

The sys.props$ table is not properly populated with NLS parameter values.

To verify, you have to check the number of rows in sys.props$:

    SVRMGR> connect internal;
    connected.
    SVRMGR> select count(*) from sys.props$;

The number of rows differs for different versions of the database:

In 7.3.x there should be 14 entries in sys.props$
In 8.0.x there should be 15 entries in sys.props$
In 8.1.x there should be 21 entries in sys.props$

Check the alert.log file for other possible errors. For example, possible
    sys.props$ table corruption message.

The only available solution in this case is to recreate the database.

To solve, delete database, created new password file using orapwd utility and then recreated database.
