Is there any way to get Oracle 8i to install on Windows XP?

Oracle 8i should install to Windows XP just fine, unless you have a P4 processor. If that is the case, here's a link explaining how to do it:

I can start the database, but only manually. Is there any way the database will start automatically?

In Windows, go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
You will see a list of services that are available on your machine. If you scroll down the list, there should be one called "OracleService<instance name>". Right-click on it, click on Properties, then change the Startup type in the drop-down box to "Automatic". This will start the Oracle server automatically when you start Windows.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. In the services it is set for automatic start up, but it just hangs there always saying 'starting' and never starts.
